Little is said about how the mentoring experience helps the mentors themselves. I certainly didn't expect the degree of satisfaction I would get when one of my mentees who had a minor police record and a long unemployment history subsequently got a job and later on a promotion. Nor did I expect the resulting improvement in my own interpersonal relations. My 19 year old son now talks to me instead of grunting. He even asks me for advice, something unheard of previously. It may be coincidence but I like to think that mentoring has played an important role in improving the way I see people and the way they see me.
